So - I played with the measurement system. This isn't sophisticated: a very long time ago I bought some Seas coaxial units from Sean Williams, then running Williams Hart. I also bought a Stage Line ECM40 measurement microphone and an AudioBuddy amp that would provide the necessary 48V phantoom power. More recently I bought an Icicle USB preamp that provides the power and is a lot more convenient to use.

I spent some time earlier waving the microphone around in front of the speakers with REW playing white noise and watching the spectrum analyser. That actually identified that one of the drivers - and I think its the tweeter on the speaker pictured previously - is wired inverted - easily solved in the 2x4HD setup. And some of the EQ decisions were questionable.

It was relatively easy to adjust for broadly flat EQ at the my desk, but the result does sound bright. To be fair my study is full of shelves and books and has a wooden floor - its very 'live'.

Currently playing, I've adopted a high frequency shelf modelled after Linkwitz' Orions - I lose 3dB from 1kHz to 10kHz and it seems more relaxed and less 'shiny hi-fi'.

For informed discussion on this see: * Orion 3 * High-frequency down-shelving for ORION-3 * Psycho-acoustic 3 kHz dip

I figure that if I'm going to copy someone, then it might as well be The Master.

I have yet to try Harwood's recommended treatment.
